From 11 March 2026, the Australian Government amended the legislative requirements for the Subclass 407 Training Visa. Under the new rules, applicants can no longer lodge all parts of the application at the same time. This affects: Overseas applicants planning structured workplace training in Australia Onshore applicants relying on bridging visas Employers sponsoring trainees under the 407 program If you are considering a 407 visa, early planning is now critical.
What Has Changed? ❌ Old Process (No Longer Allowed) Previously, the process was flexible: Sponsorship application Training nomination Visa application All three could be lodged on the same day. Once lodged, the applicant would usually receive a Bridging Visa, allowing them to remain lawfully in Australia while waiting for a decision.
✅ New Process (Now Mandatory) Under the new rules, a 407 visa application is only valid if both of the following are already approved: ✅ The employer is an approved Temporary Activities Sponsor ✅ The Training Nomination has been approved Only after nomination approval can the visa application be submitted. ➡️ This means no simultaneous lodgement is allowed anymore.
Why This Change Is So Important While the change sounds procedural, it creates real risks if not managed correctly. 1. No Bridging Visa During Sponsorship & Nomination Stage Because the visa application cannot be lodged until the nomination is approved: ❌ No bridging visa is granted during early stages ❌ Applicants must hold a valid visa at all times Previously, lodging everything together protected applicants from becoming unlawful. That safety net is now gone.
2. Higher Risk If Your Current Visa Is Expiring This is the biggest concern for onshore applicants. If your current visa expires before: Sponsorship approval, or Nomination approval you may not be able to lodge the 407 visa in time. This could result in: Being required to leave Australia temporarily Needing to apply for a different visa to remain lawful Delays to your training start date Loss of employment or training opportunity Since sponsorship and nomination approvals can take weeks or even months, timing is now critical.
3. Employers Must Plan Earlier Than Before Employers can no longer rely on last‑minute visa lodgements. They must: Apply for sponsorship approval early (if not already approved) Allow sufficient time for nomination processing Coordinate carefully with the trainee’s visa status Poor planning can now impact both the business and the applicant.

You are particularly impacted if you are: ✅ Already in Australia on a student, graduate, or visitor visa ✅ Close to your current visa expiry ✅ Relying on a bridging visa to remain lawful ✅ An employer planning to sponsor trainees quickly For these groups, professional migration advice is no longer optional — it is essential.
